RATTLE SHAKIN' MAMA, MEL McGONNIGLE

This may or not be a background story about Mel McGonnigle... Way back in 1958 when he just turned 18 years old, he borrowed $35.00 to rent one hour of a recording studio in Boston Ma for the simple purpose of recording a demo. He walked in with a back up trio, known at the time as Ricky Coyne and The Guitar Rockers, and halfway through the session Mel was asked by a producer if his songs were original. Assured that they were, he told Mel that he wanted to put the songs on a label, but Ricky and his boys could not be included, and he wanted to get it done that same evening. Because Mel was underage at the time, his father had to sign the contractal agreement, and from 6PM to Midnight the A and B sides were cut. "Rattle Shakin' Mama" (the A side) is still downloaded today both in the U.S. and Europe. An original 45RPM is deemed by collectors to be worth between $400-$800 depending on condition... "and" ... forty five years after it was originally recorded, Rockin Ryan and The Goners a group on the west coast in The U.S. released their version of the song in 2003. Now... at 70 years of age... Mel's about to record 4 more retro type originals titled "Daddy Lobo", "Mean Evil Woman", "Ruby Lee" and "Sammy". When asked why he was going to do it at his age, he answered with a question which was,"Why the heck not???"

RATTLE SHAKIN' MAMA
(McGonnigle - Yakus)
MEL McGONNIGLE (ROCKET 101, 1958)

You don't like rock 'n' roll, you little Hounddog you
You ran off and left me, you found someone new
I want a pretty little girl, always Treat Me Nice
I want a lot of lovin' all through the Morning, Noon and Night
Well, rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-baby-baby-baby, don't you ever leave me blue

Well, the Chicken and the Hawk set my up and away
And did my baby leave me, well That'll Be The Day
You don't like Slippin' and a-Slidin', jumpin' back in the alley
You don't like my sister Jeannie or Long Tall Sally
Well, rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-baby-baby-baby, don't you ever leave me blue
(Rock it! Bop!)

Well now, Honey Hush you don't move like a cool Maybellene
I wanna Rock 'n' Roll Ruby for my rock 'n' roll queen
You move like Beethoven, you rock like a snale
I want a rattle shakin' mama who can really dance and wail
Yeah, rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-baby-baby-baby, don't you ever leave me blue

Well, I hope some day, Baby Doll, you return to me
Rock Over The Mountain and Across The Sea
Be-bop-a-lula, baby I love you true
Send me a Lotta Lovin', you Hounddog you
Yeah, rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-rattle shakin' mama, I love you true
A-baby-baby-baby, don't you ever leave me blue

Rattle shakin' mama, rattle shakin' mama
Rattle shakin' mama, yeah rattle shakin' mama
Oh yeah, rock it, rock, owh!
